Does W-2 e-filing also submit my forms to the states?

BoomTax's W-2 e-file workflow submits your federal wage report to the Social Security Administration (SSA). It does not submit your W-2 information to state or local agencies.

State and local information on a W-2 does not make the federal submission a state filing. The SSA's employer FAQ confirms that SSA does not forward information to state or local governments.

What to do for state reporting

  1. Check the applicable state's requirements for your tax year, including its submission method, required data, and deadlines.
  2. Arrange any required state or local filing directly with the agency or through a provider that supports it.
  3. Keep the state confirmation separately from your BoomTax federal e-file history.

If you need a spreadsheet of the data stored in BoomTax, see How do I export my forms into an Excel spreadsheet? An Excel export is a copy of your filing data, not a state-specific submission file or proof of state acceptance.
