How to File IRS Corrections

Every BoomTax filing license includes free unlimited corrections.

How to File a Correction in BoomTax

  1. Open the filing that needs corrections
  2. Edit the forms that have errors -- update amounts, TINs, names, codes, or whatever needs fixing
  3. Click 'E-File' to submit the correction for e-filing

BoomTax automatically tracks which forms you changed and only includes those in the correction submission. You do not need to select forms, check boxes, to resubmit the forms that changed.

Do I Refile Everything or Just the Corrected Forms?

BoomTax detects which forms were changed and only submits those. Your unchanged forms are not touched.

What Corrections Can I File Through BoomTax?

  • 1099 forms: Amount changes, TIN/name fixes, voiding duplicates -- all filed electronically
  • ACA forms (1095-C / 1095-B): All correction types, including two-transaction TIN/name corrections, are handled electronically
  • W-2 forms: Corrections filed through BoomTax as W-2c

After You Submit

Send corrected copies to affected recipients. The IRS requires you to furnish updated copies whenever you file a correction.

Tips to Avoid Corrections

  • Verify TINs before filing -- TIN mismatches are the number one reason for corrections. Use TINCorrect to check names and TINs against IRS records before you submit.
  • Review your data after importing -- Check your forms in BoomTax before e-filing.
  • Do not wait until the deadline -- Give yourself time to catch errors.

Can I Correct a Filing Made by Another Provider?

No. The IRS requires corrections to be submitted by the same transmitter that filed the original. If your forms were originally filed through another provider (ADP, Paychex, etc.), you will need to contact that provider to submit the correction.

If you are switching to BoomTax, you can file originals for the current tax year going forward, but corrections to prior filings must go through whoever transmitted them.

IRS Background: Two Types of Corrections

The IRS categorizes corrections into two types. BoomTax handles both.

  • One-transaction (most common): For wrong amounts, codes, or checkboxes. Submit one corrected form with the right data.
  • Two-transaction: For wrong TINs, names, or wrong recipient. Requires voiding the original, then submitting a new corrected form. For ACA forms, BoomTax handles both steps electronically.

When to Submit

As soon as you have the correct information. IRS penalties increase the longer you wait. BoomTax corrections are free and can be e-filed immediately.
