Import Spreadsheet Guidelines (Tax Year 2025)

BoomTax provides Excel import spreadsheet templates to help you easily upload your 1095-B, 1095-C, 1099, and W-2 data. These templates mirror the official IRS forms so you can enter information just as you would on paper.

General Import Rules

  • All column headers must be present in the Excel file, even if some columns have no data.
  • Names and TINs must match IRS records. Mismatches will return a TIN Validation Error.
  • Monetary fields may be entered as whole numbers (e.g., "3" instead of "3.00").
  • TINs, SSNs, EINs, 9-digit ZIP codes, and phone numbers may be entered with or without dashes. The format is standardized on import.
  • True/False fields accept:
    • Affirmative: yes, y, x, true, 1
    • Negative: no, n, false, 0, blank

If your data has formatting issues or missing information, BoomTax will show a message explaining the problem and how to fix it when you upload.

Common Import Mistakes

  • SSN starts with zero: Excel strips leading zeros. Format the SSN column as Text before entering data, or use an apostrophe to force the zero (e.g., '012-34-5678).
  • Missing required columns: Even if a column is blank for all rows, the header must still exist.
  • Filters & Hidden Cells: Remove any Excel column filters and unhide all cells
  • Excess blank rows: Large numbers of empty rows (often caused by copy/paste) can slow down the import process. Remove any unnecessary blank rows to improve performance.
