Set up and use multi-factor authentication (MFA)
BoomTax uses multi-factor authentication (MFA), also called two-factor authentication or 2FA, to verify your identity when signing in. Emailed verification codes are enabled by default. You can switch your sign-in verification to an authenticator app.
Before you begin
You need to be signed in to your own BoomTax account. To set up an authenticator, have an app such as Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator ready on your mobile device.
Sign in using emailed verification
- Sign in to BoomTax.
- When prompted, open the sign-in email sent to your account's email address.
- Enter the code on the verification screen. You can also use the sign-in link in the email in the same browser where you started signing in.
Switch to an authenticator app
- Go to Account > Security.
- Under Two Factor Authentication, select Switch to authenticator App.
- Follow the setup wizard. Select Next to continue through the steps.
- Add BoomTax to your authenticator app by scanning the QR code. If you cannot scan it, enter the displayed setup key into the app.
- Enter the code shown in your authenticator app in the Verification Code field.
- Select Verify & Enable.
A success message confirms that your authenticator app has been verified. When BoomTax next asks for sign-in verification, open that app and enter its current six-digit code.
Switch back to emailed codes
- While signed in, go to Account > Security.
- Under Two Factor Authentication, select Switch to emailed codes.
BoomTax confirms that authenticator app codes have been disabled and that verification codes will be emailed going forward.
Troubleshooting
- The email has not arrived: Check your spam folder. When the countdown finishes, select Send Another Link on the verification screen. Contact BoomTax support if you still cannot find the email.
- A code is rejected: Confirm that you are using the code for the BoomTax account you are signing in to. For an authenticator, try the current code shown in the app.
- You cannot access your authenticator or email: Contact BoomTax support for assistance. The switch back to emailed codes is available while you are signed in.
