IRIS Error Codes and What They Mean

Overview

The IRS IRIS system uses different error codes than the legacy FIRE system. BoomTax translates IRIS errors into clear, actionable messages in your filing status. You generally don't need to know the raw IRIS error codes — but this article explains them in case you see references in IRS correspondence or want to understand what's happening behind the scenes.

How BoomTax Handles IRIS Errors

When BoomTax submits your filing through IRIS, the IRS validates the data in real time. If there's an issue, IRIS returns structured error codes. BoomTax automatically:

  • Translates the technical IRIS error into a plain-language message.
  • Shows the affected forms in your filing with a clear "Fix This" indicator.
  • Handles resubmission after you make corrections.

In most cases, you'll see the same familiar filing statuses: Accepted, Accepted with Errors, or Rejected.

Common IRIS Error Categories

TIN/Name Mismatch Errors

The payee's Taxpayer Identification Number (SSN or EIN) doesn't match IRS records for the name provided. This is the most common error type.

What to do: Verify the TIN and name against the recipient's W-9. Correct the form in BoomTax and resubmit.

Amount Errors

Dollar amounts are formatted incorrectly, exceed expected ranges, or don't add up correctly across related fields.

What to do: Review the amounts on the flagged form. BoomTax validates amounts during data entry, so these are rare.

Missing Required Fields

A field that IRIS requires is blank or invalid. This can include payer TIN, payer name, state codes, or form-specific required fields.

What to do: Open the form in BoomTax, fill in the missing information, and resubmit.

Duplicate Submission Errors

IRIS detected that this form (same payer TIN + payee TIN + form type + tax year) was already submitted.

What to do: If this is intentional (a correction), make sure you're filing it as a corrected return, not an original. If it's a true duplicate, you may need to void the extra submission.

Schema Validation Errors

The XML submitted to IRIS doesn't conform to the IRS schema specification. BoomTax customers should never see this error — BoomTax generates valid XML automatically. If you encounter this, contact support.

FIRE vs IRIS Error Handling

FIRE (Old) IRIS (New)
Batch processing — errors reported hours or days later Real-time validation — errors returned immediately
Reject codes in status files Structured SOAP fault codes
Limited error descriptions Detailed error messages with field-level specifics

The benefit of IRIS: you find out about errors faster, so you can fix and resubmit sooner.
