FIRE to IRIS: Nothing Changes for BoomTax Customers
The Short Version
The IRS is shutting down the FIRE system on December 31, 2026. If you use BoomTax, nothing changes for you. Your filing process, your data, and your workflow stay exactly the same. BoomTax already files through IRIS.
What BoomTax Handles Automatically
You may have heard about the IRS FIRE-to-IRIS transition and wondered if it affects your filing. Here's what's happening behind the scenes — and why you don't need to worry:
- BoomTax already uses IRIS. For tax year 2024 and later, all 1099 forms are transmitted to the IRS through the IRIS system. This happened automatically — no action was needed on your part.
- Your FIRE-format files still work. If you upload IRS Pub. 1220 / FIRE-format data files, BoomTax accepts them and converts the data to the IRIS XML format automatically. You don't need to learn a new file format.
- No TCC needed. IRIS requires a separate Transmitter Control Code from FIRE. BoomTax files under its own IRS-authorized IRIS TCC, so you never need to apply for one.
- Error codes are translated. IRIS returns different error codes than FIRE did. BoomTax translates these into the same clear, actionable messages you see in your filing status.
- State filing works the same. Combined Federal/State filing through IRIS is handled automatically, just like before.
- Corrections work the same. Filing corrections through IRIS follows the same process in your BoomTax account.
What You Should NOT Do
- Do not apply for your own IRIS TCC — you don't need one with BoomTax.
- Do not try to convert your files to XML — BoomTax does this automatically.
- Do not change your data import process — Excel, CSV, QuickBooks, FIRE files, and API imports all continue to work.
